Tribune Tower

Chicago, Illinois

The Tribune Tower, one of Chicago's iconic skyscrapers, was converted from its original use as headquarters for Col. Robert F. McCormick's Chicago Tribune newspaper to luxury condominiums in 2018. VHA provided preservation consulting to Architect of Record Solomon Cordwell Buenz. Work included historic research, City of Chicago landmark approvals and design consultations for exterior and interior spaces of architectural significance.

The Tribune Tower's original lobby, a Chicago landmark, re-purposed as one of two new entries to the residential complex. VHA first restored this space in the 1980's for the Tribune Company with work including reconstruction of the missing reception desk and restoration of the plaster map of North America, retrieved from the Field Museum of Natural History.

At left, view of restored reception desk and map of North America, both dating from 1925. Note new minimal glass access control doors in arched openings.

At right, restored elevator lobbies accessing residential floors.
