This private residence is located in Chicago's Kenwood landmark district. Its owner requested a contemporary house for living, entertaining and art display that would sit comfortably within the historic neighborhood. In its massing, materials and details, VHA's design acknowledges and riffs on this rich context.
Set a half story above grade, the two story residence features a modern front stoop and a prominent stair tower. Exterior materials of Roman brick and limestone trim take cues from nearby houses by notable Chicago architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, George Maher and Howard Van Doren Shaw.
The home's interiors feature generous proportions, a restrained material palette, and careful detailing.
