Michigan Cottage #2

IMG_2133

This historic cottage on Northern Michigan's Crystal Lake has been in the same family for generations. By the 1980s, it was showing its age. The current owners asked VHA to renovate the building for year-round vacation use. A complete replanning included the removal of unsympathetic additions; restoration of exterior cladding, windows and finishes; design of new stairs, canopies and entrances; and an overhaul of mechanical systems and waterproofing.

Working with Chicago landscape architect Peter Lindsay Schaudt, the grounds and lakefront were restored. Native plants and trees were reintroduced, and a sandy beach was reclaimed from what was previously overgrown shore.
