Lincoln Park West Penthouse

Chicago, Illinois

The spaces of this 1915 single floor penthouse apartment were stripped clean by removing all aspects of later remodelings. Surviving historic elements, such as the oak Living Room windows, were carefully stripped and restored to their original condition. New contemporary portals and baseboards were added in matching oak, and new windows were placed to duplicate the original window divisions.

The original limestone clad foyer was restored by removing paint layers and inserting new matching limestone elements where missing. A non-original tile floor was removed and replaced with a honed Carthage stone floor surrounded by a border of Petit Granit marble.

Contemporary furnishings and lighting reinforce the axial arrangement of the Dining Room and Library.

All bathrooms were clad in honed and book-matched Carrara marble slabs on both floors and walls. An etched partition in the Master Bathroom separates the toilet area. Floors in the two secondary bathrooms were covered with single-piece Carrara slabs.

VHA worked on numerous aspects of the building, including the restoration of the entrance lobbies and separate historic garage building.
