David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art

Chicago, Illinois

VHA performed a comprehensive renovation and redesign of the Smart Museum, the University of Chicago's art museum. VHA examined the existing building, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, to assess display, storage, lighting, accessibility and life safety.

The project resulted in reconfigured gallery spaces, a new prints and drawings study center, new permanent art storage facilities, and lobby improvements to accommodate retail and cafe functions. Construction was completed in six months, minimizing disruption of the museum's programming.
